Dark Thicket Minigame Upgrades and Strategy
Dark Thicket is the first minigame in Nightwater. Developer statements clarify tree felling, milestone unlocks, and controls.

- What reward do you get for clearing out all the trees in the forest minigame?
- Why is the primitive gearbox not unlocking?
- Is there a sprint toggle to prevent hand fatigue in Dark Thicket?
- Can you play Dark Thicket and place buildings using only a controller?
- Why is the game not registering new resources harvested in the mountain biome?
- Will demo progress carry over to full game?
What reward do you get for clearing out all the trees in the forest minigame?
Upgrading axes inside Dark Thicket allows chopping down every standing trunk in the zone, but the current build gives no special trophy or hidden blueprint for complete deforestation. The Steam achievements list sits at 0 achievements before launch. Progress in this first minigame feeds directly into progression in The Woods.
Each of the 5 planned minigames supplies items and efficiency buffs used outside the minigame activity. Clearing the final tree empties the screen, but rewards come strictly through milestone pacing that unlocks portions of the 100+ buildings, crafts, and buffs.
Why is the primitive gearbox not unlocking?
The milestone requirement for the primitive gearbox lists 600 oak wood. Players have reported harvesting 937 oak wood with the recipe remaining grayed out inside the primitive assembler. The demo build has no confirmed fix for this trigger.
Studio Ashty noted in the March 9 post-playtest update that mechanics will receive clearer descriptions and bug fixes, with revised progression pacing for version 1.0. If wood counts exceed 600 while the craft stays locked, no confirmed fix is documented yet.
Is there a sprint toggle to prevent hand fatigue in Dark Thicket?
Dark Thicket requires continuous movement between tree clusters, but the demo interface lacks a dedicated sprint toggle. Community feedback on September 10, 2026, cited hand fatigue from holding down the sprint input during repeated chopping runs, as well as disorienting camera shifts from automatic zoom effects.
Studio Ashty listed Camera Comfort and Playable without Timed Input among accessibility options on the Steam store page. A toggle for sprinting remains absent from the public demo ahead of the September 18, 2026 release, and no confirmed fix is documented yet.
Can you play Dark Thicket and place buildings using only a controller?
Gamepad functionality is incomplete in the pre-release demo. Movement and chopping register on a controller, but interface prompts display an instruction to press B that refers to the letter B on a keyboard rather than the controller button.
When community members reported that building placement required a keyboard, developer Studio Ashty replied: "I'll rework the controller support before the full release, thanks for the feedback!" The Steam store page lists full controller support, adjustable text size, and custom volume controls for the launch version, where players can place and link 60+ buildings without secondary hardware.
Why is the game not registering new resources harvested in the mountain biome?
Mining tin or automating coal extraction with a crusher in the mountain area leaves the progression counter frozen at 1 coal or 0 processed ore. This limitation is intentional in test builds. Studio Ashty confirmed in an update on April 30, 2026, that the demo allows milestone progress only within the starting zone and Dark Thicket.
| Zone | Milestone Progression | Minigame Access |
|---|---|---|
| The Woods | Full unlocks for crafts, buildings, and buffs | Dark Thicket fully playable |
| Mountains | Locked preview where gathered items stay uncredited | Preview available without milestone items |
The developer opened the mountain zone purely as a preview. Gathering tin or coal will not advance research stats until the full release arrives under Studio Ashty and publisher Irox Games on September 18, 2026. That version will track progression across 20+ resources and unlock more than 100 buildings, crafts, and buffs across multiple eras, from primitive tools to the Bronze Age and modern machinery.
Will demo progress carry over to full game?
Save files created during demo or playtest sessions do not transfer to the launch version. When players asked about retaining unlocked tools and wood inventories, Studio Ashty stated: "New start is required since some parts of the early game have been replaced and they could lead to corruption or bugs if the demo save is continued."
The demo covers between 1 hour of direct objectives and 4 hours of exploration. All structures, axe upgrades, and milestone progress reset when version 1.0 launches on September 18, 2026, at 08:00 PDT.
