Nightwater Minigames and Factory Modifiers
Studio Ashty designed five standalone minigames across the biomes of Nightwater. Completing their individual loops provides production bonuses and structural upgrades for your island.

Are minigames required to complete Nightwater?
Nightwater has 5 minigames placed across the floating island, each tied to a specific environment. Campaign progression centers on gathering materials by hand, routing pipes between 60 or more production structures, and advancing technology from primitive tools to the Bronze Age and the Industrial Era. Reaching the Lighthouse and triggering any of the 4 narrative endings never requires entering these secondary modes.
Playing them supplies upgrades and production boosts that speed up island construction. Each activity contains its own items and internal progression. External rewards feed into factory operations, helping grow your factory and boost efficiency. If you bypass all 5 minigames, factory expansion continues through normal resource gathering across the 20 or more island resources.
What is the Dark Thicket minigame and what does it unlock?
Located in the starting biome called The Woods, Dark Thicket appeared in the May 8, 2026 demo with a full progression loop. Studio Ashty connected this mode directly to main progression.
Progression inside this mode unlocks external production perks.
- Building blueprints that expand processing setups outside the forest.
- Production buffs that boost efficiency and factory growth.
- Crafting recipes that feed directly into factory networks.
The demo as a whole takes around 1 hour (or roughly 60 to 90 minutes in the initial playtest) to complete the available content, and about 4 hours to fully explore.
How do minigame rewards affect factory automation?
Stages completed across the 5 minigames grant three categories of rewards: structural blueprints, crafting recipes, and passive factory buffs. These rewards export straight into the main settlement grid to manage more than 20 resources across a catalog of over 100 buildings, crafts, and buffs.
Efficiency and growth provide the primary benefit. Minigame buffs help boost efficiency while farmers, assemblers, and storage units run through pipe networks. Late-game structures allow automated lines to make factories faster, more efficient, and even bigger. Buildings can be relocated or deconstructed at any time without losing items, so any new blueprint can be dropped into an active assembly line immediately.
Why is there no sprint toggle in the Dark Thicket minigame?
In the demo build released on May 8, 2026, players reported wrist discomfort due to holding down the sprint control continuously throughout Dark Thicket. Community feedback logged on September 10, 2026 noted that the lack of a sprint toggle caused physical strain, alongside a request for an option to disable the zoom effect while sprinting.
No sprint toggle exists in the public demo files, and no confirmed fix or toggle option is documented yet by the developer. Studio Ashty documented related quality of life adjustments following the March 9, 2026 playtest, including camera comfort and text size options, but there is no official confirmation regarding a sprint toggle setting.
Can you unlock milestones in the Mountains minigame preview?
The Steam demo includes a preview of the Mountains biome alongside an early look at the second minigame in that high-altitude zone. Milestone progression is turned off for this area in the pre-launch software. Players who mine coal or tin find that resource counts stop registering after a single unit, which stops related research.
Developer Studio Ashty defined the content boundaries of the demo on April 30, 2026.
- The Woods biome has all milestone items and building unlocks active.
- Dark Thicket has full progression, upgrade paths, and factory rewards enabled.
- The Mountains biome and its minigame are restricted to a preview where milestone items cannot be unlocked.
The full progression path for the Mountains minigame unlocks when the 1.0 edition arrives on September 18, 2026.
Does clearing every tree in the forest minigame grant an achievement?
A player raised this question after leveling axes and deforesting the entire Dark Thicket map, asking whether complete clearance yielded an extra trinket or trophy. The action produces no hidden modifier or platform reward.
The Steam backend shows 0 achievements registered for the game prior to its official launch. Studio Ashty confirmed after the March 9, 2026 playtest that future updates would add interactables to the overworld and refine pacing, but no reward exists in the demo for wiping out every tree.
Can you play minigames using a controller?
The official store page lists full controller support, stereo sound, and adjustable difficulty. Despite this listing, playtest participants and demo players encountered friction when navigating menus. A forum user noted that prompts displayed keyboard letters, telling players to press B to open the building menu rather than a gamepad button.
Developer Studio Ashty responded directly to this feedback and confirmed that controller support will be reworked before the full release. In the demo, players found that while the controller works for various actions, several interactions still require using a keyboard.
Will minigame progression carry over from the demo to the full game?
Forum discussions raised questions about whether hours spent clearing trees and unlocking buffs in Dark Thicket or The Woods would transfer to the September 18, 2026 release. Developer Ashty confirmed that continuing from a demo save file is disabled.
Structural changes made between the demo and version 1.0 prevent saves from carrying over.
- Parts of the early game were replaced, requiring a fresh start in the release build.
- Continuing a demo save could lead to corruption or bugs in the full game.
- All players must start a clean save when launching the retail build on Windows.
Can automated factory machines run while you play a minigame?
Factory mechanics in Nightwater rely on autonomous machines, with farmers, assemblers, and storage containers linked by piping. These systems run uninterrupted during minigame sessions. You can establish basic production lines during the primitive era, then leave machines operating while you test strategies in Dark Thicket or upcoming zones.
You can build as many machines as you want and deconstruct or move any of the 60 or more structures at will without losing items. This frees you from manual harvesting to split time between designing pipe connections and unlocking auxiliary buffs. Connected storage units continue to stockpile factory output while you work through secondary upgrade trees.
